Inspired by real experiences with children on the spectrum, MITZVAH tells the story of a family who has a son with autism: the challenges and disappointments, the hilarious moments and the love. It’s a story of a marriage crumbling down, and a young boy growing up. Incorporating klezmer and Jewish liturgical musical, MITZVAH explores the true meaning of coming-of-age rituals.

David and Irene write music and lyrics that cut right to the heart with love and honesty. This show gets right to the core of the JPP’s mission - bringing the power of Jewish stories to the widest audience.
— Artistic Director David Winitsky

David Hein and Irene Sankoff are best known for writing, producing and starring in My Mother’s Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding, based on David’s mother’s true story. Originally produced at the Toronto Fringe Festival, MMLJWW was picked up by Mirvish Productions, the largest Canadian theatre producer, and has now played to almost 100,000 people across North America, earning rave reviews and winning awards, including “Outstanding New Musical” and “Best Book” (NYMF) and nominations for “Best Comedic Play” (Canadian Comedy Awards) and a Weston New Musical Award nomination. Their second show, Come From Away, was developed at Goodspeed Musicals’ Festival of New Artists and the Canadian Music Theatre Project – and it was the hit of the 2013 NAMT Festival of New Works. It will receive a world premiere at the La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego, with direction by Chris Ashley and choreography by Kelly Devine. Irene holds an MFA from the New School for Drama in NYC and has performed in numerous theatre, film, and television. David is an award-winning singer/songwriter who has toured North America, released 4 CD’s, and was music supervisor on the Muppet’s Kermit’s Swamp Years. Prior to MMLJWW, David wrote songs for the Toronto Fringe hit, Death to Dating. He holds a BFA from York University.
