Set in Toronto’s crime-filled neighborhood of Kensington Market against the backdrop of the roaring twenties, Prohibition, and the biggest race riot in Canadian history, a family of would-be gangsters try to support themselves by running a speakeasy out of their domineering mother’s basement. When a murder is committed and a job goes wrong, the family is suddenly flung into the high-stakes American gangland world of Al Capone and Detroit’s Infamous Purple Gang.

Toronto-born Michael Ross Albert is the author of several plays including For a Good Time, Call Kathy Blanchard (Next Stage Theatre Festival, FringeNYC, available on Indie Theatre Now); Karenin’s Anna (Toronto Fringe Festival, “Outstanding New Play,” -- NOW Magazine); Chagrin (FringeNYC), For the Winter (Samuel French Off-Off Broadway Short Play Festival), and Four Sons (winner, Under 20’s New Play Contest, Tarragon Theatre).His play Starfishes opened Off-Broadway at the Theatre at Dance New Amsterdam and is included in "Best American Short Plays 2010-2011. "Michael’s play The Grass is Greenest at the Houston Astrodome received its world premiere in FringeNYC in 2014. The play will be published by Applause in "Best American Short Plays 2014-2015." The text is currently available on Indie Theatre Now. Excerpts from the play will appear in both "Best Women’s" and "Best Men’s Stage Monologues 2016," published by Smith & Kraus.The Jenny Wiley Theatre commissioned Michael to write The Big Sandy River Plays, a triptych of historical fiction set in Eastern Appalachia. The plays were performed in repertory over three seasons between 2012-2015 in Pikeville, Kentucky. Michael received an MFA in Playwriting from the Actors Studio Drama School at Pace University. He is an associate member of the Dramatists Guild of America, and a founding co-artistic director of the New York City-based theatre company, Outside Inside.
