Go Down, Moses
gO down, moses
by Dana Leslie Goldstein
Ethics professor Philip Hoffman and newly appointed Dean of Students Albert Becker already have a long history: marching side by side for civil rights, registering voters together during freedom summer, and maintaining a friendship that crosses the boundaries of race, religion and country of birth. Now in late middle age, they work at a small, liberal university, where part of the job is training a new crop of activists. But when a star student from the South Bronx – Angela Carter - crosses the administration and invites a controversial speaker to campus, free speech becomes a battle cry, and those who fought together to end injustice suddenly find themselves on opposing sides.
“This is a riveting play with unexpected turns and central relationships that present a kaleidoscope of perspectives on the connection between Jews and African-Americans, both in the 1980s, when the play is set, and today. The play captures a moment of great transition in the ongoing relationship between two important American communities.”
