BAR MITZVAH BOY

by MARK LEIREN-YOUNG

In the JPP's view, the measure of Jewish life and values is their utility in navigating complex 21st Century lives.

In Mark's play, we see a woman of faith struggling to find her way after a terrible tragedy, and secular man finding new purpose through ritual and generational relationships.

Faith, suffering, children, joy, and community. These are some of the highest ideals in Jewish life, and Mark's play gets us there.

This play is brand new - its never had a public reading or workshop or production -  and the JPP could not be more excited to help Mark share it with the world.

Mark Leiren-Young is a Canadian playwright, author, screenwriter and filmmaker. His play, Shylock (about the perils of playing you know who) is being produced in September 2017 by Bard in the Beach in Vancouver and a Czech translation is in rep at Divadlo Na Jezerce in Prague until 2019. His new book The Killer Whale Who Changed the World is in stores now in the US, Canada and the UK. His documentary (same whale, same name) surfaces at festivals in 2017. He’s based in Victoria, BC and was Bar Mitzvahed at Vancouver’s Beth Israel. www.leiren-young.com @leirenyoung

This is an absolutely original story, from the grand scale of the piece to every individual specific idea and character. I absolutely loved it.
