YEAR 7:
The Best of the
Jewish Playwriting Contest

Here's how the Contest works this year:

THE TOP 62

All playwrights selected for the 2012-2017 Top 10 Lists are contacted about the BEST OF Year.
Playwrights are given 2 weeks to indicate that they will participate.
Playwrights submit a new application form and the latest draft of their play.

THE READING ROUNDS

Each play will be read at least 3 times by members of the Round 1 Reading Panel.
Selected plays will move on to Round 2.
Round 2 plays will be read at least 2 more times.
In the first week of October, the Top 7 BEST OF plays will be announced.

COMMUNITY PANEL REVIEW

In cities across the country groups of 10-25 Jewish community lay leaders and local arts professionals will read the Top 7 plays.
Each City Panel will select three plays.

2018 Contest cities include: Houston, Hartford, Fairfax, Philadelphia, Chicago, Palo Alto, Charlotte, New York, and potentially Portland, San Francisco, Atlanta and Fort Lauderdale.

CONTEST SCORING

- Every play gets 1 point for being in the Top 10

- If a play is chosen for the Top 3 in any region, it gets 1 point.

- If a play wins a Live Contest Event, it gets 2 more points, for a total of 3

The play with the most points at the end wins the Contest. Simple, right?

In addition, some number of plays from the Top 7 will be selected for publication. More details on this to follow.

HERE'S WHAT WE WANT YOU TO KNOW:

Is this Contest fair? As much as we can make it. But competition is really not the goal here. Each of these plays (and many others that we read and considered) is a fantastic vision from the inside of a playwright's head about the way we live Jewish life today. To declare one a "WINNER" or to say its "BETTER" is in no way conclusive or "right", and it's not the point.

The JPP's Contest format is built to shine a light on a new kind of Jewish narrative, created by emerging writers all over the world. We want hundreds of individuals to interact with these plays through the JPP, then thousands on the stages where they are produced, and then millions as they enter the cannon of literary drama.
